Disposable Products by Earthchoice

After bringing home a delicious blueberry muffin from a local family owned cafe The French Market Place yesterday, I was pleased when I opened the container and found it to be a recyclable Earthchoice Fiber Blend Hingeware container by Pactive. This container is made in the U.S.A. of a blend of fiber and pulp materials from sustainable and renewable resources.

Although I had passed The French Market Place a million times and always wanted to stop in, this was my first time visiting this cafe as there are so many great restaurants and shops just walking distance from my house to choose from. I will definitely visit again, not just because of the reasonably priced, simple-but-good breakfast, friendly service and fun atmosphere with a Bourbon Street themed decor, but specifically knowing that I am supporting a local business that promotes eco-friendly, recylable products.

Even more exciting, I discovered that Pactive's Earthchoice line offers a variety of other eco-friendly products including straws made with PLA, a 100% annually renewable material made from plants. According to Ingeo's website, "If you replace the PET in 100,000 plastic food containers with Ingeo, you can save greenhouse gas emissions equal to driving a car 16,000 miles and non-renewable energy equal to 10 barrels of oil or 775 gallons of gasoline."

For more information on Ingeo's impact on the environment, visit Ingeo's Eco Profile.  Every step we take makes a difference towards positive impact, so please take it even one step further in your own community and ask your local restaurants to carry and promote eco-friendly renewable products and containers as well.

Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson

In order to create, support and influence positive change in others, I believe I must first look in the mirror and make change happen within.

Michael Jackson's dedication to messages that matter and ability to inspire the world through music will never be forgotten! Much love.

Palisades Wine Fest at Gladstones to Benefit Friends Of Temescal Pool

I'm looking forward to attending the Palisades Wine Fest at Gladstones to Benefit Friends Of Temescal Pool takes place April 10th, 2011, 4 -7pm.

The Palisades Wine Fest is a small, exclusive wine festival focused on exhibiting the finest wines from some of California’s best known and boutique vineyards. Enjoy fine wines and hors d’oeuvres from the spectacular vantage point of Gladstone’s private rooms overlooking the ocean. Enter a chance to win an iPad2 and a large screen television, which will be announced at the Fest. There will also be a silent auction for many fabulous items. Proceeds of the Palisades Wine Fest will benefit the efforts of the Friends of Temescal Pool to reopen the historic, treasured landmark, the Temescal Canyon Pool (www.FriendsTemescalPool.com).

Please join me for a fun Sunday afternoon of wine-tasting on the beach while supporting a great cause.

Coconut Water (Superfood) Not All It's Cracked Up To Be.

In my quest to be informed about the value or non-value of what I'm ingesting and digesting, I spend significant amounts of time researching all types of food, their nutritional value and other benefits, especially the ability of a food to heal. This process has ranged greatly to include learning what foods will help me heal quickly when ill, which foods to avoid, how to prepare a meal to receive the maximum health benefits without losing its taste, proper proportions per meal and per day, food combining for maximum efficiency, and more. I have experienced real benefits of food healing as part of my strategy to live well.

After hearing many ramblings around Los Angeles from various sources about the incredible benefits of coconut water, being handed a glass of it by a friend last weekend, and then seeing it on sale at my local supermarket, I purchased 4 boxes of Vita Coco coconut water this week and figured I'd give it a try. Their ad states it is "all-natural, super-hydrating, fat-free, cholesterol-free, nutrient-packed, potassium-stacked, mega-electrolyte coconut super water". I drank a half a glass of it this morning and had an immediate auto-reflex reaction response to vomit. My next response was... "What?!?!?" Things that are good for me usually don't trigger such immediate negative responses so I immediately ran to the computer and started googling the benefits of coconut water.

I was quickly surprised to discover that the first 20 items on my search were not linked to valid sources of food or scientific information. I found mostly blogs and a few health articles and read through a few, quickly discovering that amongst the many health benefit claims made about coconut water, the only information I could validate is that it is a good source of potassium, 600mg per 8 oz. serving vs. 537mg per cup of raw banana according to the USDA National Nutrient Database. There has been little other evidence to support any of the other claims about it's benefits, which varied from being a good cure for a hangover, a post-workout replacement drink for sports drinks and the most drastic and wild claim was that it eliminates intestinal worms. That is quite a claim to make with no evidence to support it!

Of the research I did, I found this article the most interesting and worth sharing: Sometimes you feel like a nut: Coconut water as a health elixir

My final analysis of the day being that while coconut water is a good source of potassium, may have other unsubstantiated benefits, and some may truly enjoy the taste, it is decidedly a superfood. That may sound good at first, but the word superfood has no legal definition and is commonly used as a misleading marketing tactic which has been banned in the E.U. "unless it is accompanied by a specific authorised health claim that explains to consumers why the product is good for their health."

All things considered, I think I'll stick with bananas! They're much easier to crack into.

The Purpose of A World Butterfly ~ My Inspiration

I am documenting this journey with a purpose in mind.

My personal and professional experiences can be described as similar to the metamorphosis of a butterfly: growing, learning, expanding knowledge, gaining insight and evolving in the quest for love, peace, health & prosperity.

I trust my internal compass as strong and thriving, keeping me on track to pursue challenging and rewarding life goals.

NOW is always the time to make a difference and create positive impact.

My intention is to step-by-step create change through action that can benefit many worldwide.

About Me

MY NAME IS VANESSA. WORLD IS A COMMON NAME FOR THE PLANET EARTH BUT IS ALSO OFTEN USED TO MEAN THE SUM OF HUMAN CIVILIZATION LIVING ON IT, SPECIFICALLY HUMAN EXPERIENCE, HISTORY, OR THE 'HUMAN CONDITION' IN GENERAL.[1] IN A METAPHYSICAL CONTEXT, WORLD MAY REFER TO THE UNIVERSE, EVERYTHING THAT CONSTITUTES REALITY. VANESSA HAS BEEN ADOPTED AS THE NAME OF A GENUS OF BUTTERFLY. THE ANCIENT GREEK WORD FOR "BUTTERFLY" IS ΨΥΧΉ (PSȲCHĒ), WHICH PRIMARILY MEANS "SOUL", "MIND". A BUTTERFLY IS SEEN AS THE PERSONIFICATION OF A PERSON'S SOUL; WHETHER THEY BE LIVING, DYING, OR ALREADY DEAD. IN CHINESE CULTURE TWO BUTTERFLIES FLYING TOGETHER ARE A SYMBOL OF LOVE. IN SOME OLD CULTURES, BUTTERFLIES ALSO SYMBOLIZE REBIRTH INTO A NEW LIFE AFTER BEING INSIDE A COCOON FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS MY STORY...
